North American F-100 Super Sabre (8492)

The F-100 was the first USAF fighter to exceed the speed of sound in level flight. During the years 1955-1962 it was one of the mainstays of the USAF. Several were used in the early part of the Vietnam War. This F-100 jet fighter at Castle Air Museum was used for high speed research at Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California, for about 15 years. It was also used to represent the entire F-100 series in all kinds of high speed research. After July 6, 1972, this aircraft was retired from flight.
