Cruiser Blucher, with a crew of 800 plus 1500 troops aboard, was hoping to surprise the Norwegians and occupy Oslo. The fort, manned mostly by local reservists fired two rounds from the only two working guns, hitting the Blucher and disabling her. Two torpedoes also struck the ship, sinking her. Only two hundred German soldiers and sailors survived.

Holmenkrollen chapel, designed in the style of the old Norwegian stave churches. This is a recent reconstruction, the original, built in 1903 having been destroyed by an act of arson. Three "black metal" rock musicians were convicted of the arson in 1993.
