The '70s: A bicentennial minute in Colonial Williamsburg, VA. President Ford, the Governor of Virginia and wife amused by my daughter's two-handed wave.
January 1976. We were surprised the president rode so exposed and no more than 30 feet from the crowds on the sidewalk. He had already been the target of two assassination attempts. This was near the beginning of his election-year campaign. The scandals of the Nixon administration and his pardon of Nixon sealed his defeat to Jimmy Carter that fall.

This is a treasure! The term "Bicentennial Minute" carries instant associations for those of us old enough to recall the time. And you're right about how unguarded we were back then, even after all that had happened since 1963. It's pretty incredible. Nice to have the memory of them taking special notice of your daughter's wave.

It was all very serendipitous. We had no idea that the president would be there that day and I don't think there was a lot of advance notice locally. It was the dead of winter and, as can be seen, there were few visitors in town. We were perched on the porch of some shop with a handful of other people.

That Secret Service guy was looking at a photojournalist whom he had warned away earlier but who persisted in trying to close. The agent, who was the chief of the presidents protective detail was pretty POed at the guy.
