one of the plaster casts taken of a victim of the Vesuvius eruption.


The victims were killed by the searing, poison gas and later covered by hot ash that consumed the bodies, leaving an open space in the cooled volcanic ash. Plaster was injected into these spaces to yield this eerily detailed models of the victims. They are at the same time horrifying and compelling.
