Bear In the Woods--Smokey Mountains National Park, 1974.
A black bear, probably from central casting, appeared during our last hour in the park to complete our visit. Submitted to the VPTP for "Field or Forest" theme week.

We have a large population of black bears around here,. Although I've never seen one, they're frequently spotted around town here as we are surrounded by mountains an forests. They are especially busy in the spring at composts and bird feeders.

Yes, bears and deer and coyotes seem to be species that have done well since this photo was taken. Several of my colleagues in New Jersey, who lived near the Pennsylvania border had bear encounters in their neighborhoods.
