Above the Potomac, looking upstream toward Maryland from Loudoun County, Virginia. Submitted to the Vintage Photos Theme Park for the monthly topic, QUAINT, CHARMING, PICTURESQUE. Fifty years ago this was considered "hunt country", where large estates of the super-wealthy, the likes of the Mellon and Mars families, dotted the countryside and their owners bred horses and rode to hounds. There are still plenty of one-percenters here today but much of the land has been turned into upscale D.C. suburbs, and surprisingly quite a few vineyards. Two years ago Kiplinger ranked Loudoun the wealthiest county in the nation.
