Willie B.

Zoo Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia. Named after Atlanta Mayor, William Berry Hartsfield, Willie B died of pneumonia at the age of 41 on February 2, 2000, seven months after this photo was taken. He was born in Cameroon and had lived at the zoo for 39 years. He was kept in a cage for 27 years until the zoo's Ford African Rain Forest Exhibit opened in 1988. Three female gorillas were placed with him. Ultimately, he fathered five offspring (for a photo of his first offspring, a female named Kudzu, see www.ipernity.com/doc/picture_taker/32055573/in/album/346469). Scanned 35mm negative (5D015)
