Chapter House Entryway - Westminster Abbey

The inner 13th Century doorway of the Chapter House represents the Annunciation. It symbolizes Mary's acceptance of the incarnation. The angels on the trefoils are witness to the event, on the left, the Archangel Gabriel and on the right, Mary. These two life size figures were carved c. 1253 and are among the most important survivals of medieval sculpture. The carving of Christ in his Majesty in the center was inserted by Sir Gilbert Scott in the 19th Century. Originally the roundel would have been empty. London, England. Scanned 35mm negative.
