Mum's auntie Marj
Folder: Family photos
Photos from Marjory Pritchard's photo album from the 1920s. The Pritchard family were enthusiastic followers of the new technology of their age. There will be photos of cars, planes, motorcycles and of the wide range of British and European locations Auntie Marj visited.
The fact that these have all been photographed by family members, in the main, is another indication of their technophilia!

These first three photos have been scanned for the benefit of a young family member, who is doing a school project on seaside holidays and the costumes bathers wore.

Marjory & Phyllis were twins, born in 1903. These photos are helping to build up a family archive, so they will not always be added to groups or be of interest to anyone outside the family - and probably most of the family as well!

Apart from Father?, no-one has graduated to motorcycles yet. The man's bike does seem to have some extra features suggesting a motor of some sort. This photo and the one by the lake were extremely faded and have been heavily processed in Photoshop to get this level of clarity.

Lizzie Pritchard with her daughters - c1905

The eldest sister Elsie, was my grandmother and the second eldest was Doris - or Auntie Do(e) to my mother. There was another older daughter, Gertrude who died in infancy. The two smallest here are twins, Marjory and Phyllis.
Pritchards on a country walk - winter c1913

It looks cold and there are no leaves on the trees - hence winter. Date-wise the twins would have been about ten and that looks about right from their size here.
Phyllis, Marjory & schoolfriends - Hereford - 1918

I am assuming that the twins are among this group, possibly the two in gymslips. It looks like a school in the background. Perhaps someone with local knowledge can identify it. There may be other photos, which identify the school, or relevant documents, in the pile of boxes I have to sort through!

There is an even clearer photo, but my scanner link is playing up and it is too late in the evening to reboot everything!*
I have identified the bike from looking through online photos. The solid looking wheels and the distinctive front fork seemed to be fairly conclusive.
The location is likely to be near Hereford, although with no distinguishing landmarks, one can't be sure.
* I have now scanned and uploaded the other similar photo in this album. It was obviously taken in warmer weather www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/38658526

I initially thought that the machine on the right was a typewriter, but it appears to have a strip of paper or card running into it from the right. The other machine, which I think is the same one as in another of this batch of photos., looks a bit like an adding or accounting machine I have seen somewhere.

I now realise that I should have put 1921 as the date on the caption. Although this photo wasn't dated, it was obviously taken at the same time as the similar one dated 1921.

Marjory & Phyllis & Elsie - Cathedral Close - Here…
|
|
I am fairly sure that this was taken on the Cathedral Close lawns, at the rear of the Broad Street houses, which were demolished in the 1930s, to improve the view of the Cathedral. One of them was the Pritchard's house. I have compared the roofline seen here with the well known photo* of the front of the houses. They seem to match fairly well, although the angles of viewing are very different.
