The Artillery Museum in The Rotunda - Woolwich - in the mid-1980s
Folder: Military, Naval & Air Force
This is a collection of scanned prints, of photos taken on a visit to The Museum of Artillery in the Rotunda, Woolwich around 1985. I cannot remember whether photography was banned inside the Rotunda, but all my photos are of large exhibits outside the building. Many of the exhibits have now been transferred to the Firepower museum in the former Royal Artillery Barracks at Woolwich. The Rotunda is…

Rotunda 18th C light garrison gun
|
|
The style of barrel looks 18th c., or earlier, but garrison guns in the muzzle-loading era were kept in service for many years. The carriage, with its adjustable height, looks more 19th c.
Garrison guns were used in fixed fortifications, like coastal defence forts, so their carriages were not designed to be very manoeuvreable and they sometimes had adaptations, like this one, to allow them to shoot downwards onto attacking forces.

Rotunda late 19th C breech-loading field guns

These are two guns - top left is one and the others are the second. They seem to have a relatively small calibre and features shared with late 19th C naval guns. That is assuming they are British.

Rotunda - German WW2 field gun & limber x
|
|
I can't immediately identify this gun, but I am fairly sure it is a German WW2 model, although with the wooden wheels on the gun and limber, it could be from WW1. If any one can positively identify it that would be good.
