SDJR - models & drawings etc for model making
Folder: Railways including tramways
All the S&D drawings on graph paper were drawn with a bow pen and ruler. They were primarily working drawings for model making. The dimensions were generally fairly accurate, but I suspect that the vertical measurements of the passenger stock probably related to the Triang GWR clerestory coaches, that I was carving up to make S&D stock. This was before the days of Ratio Midland panelled carriages.…

One of the drawings I made prior to carving up Triang GWR clerestory coaches back in the late 1960s. It is probably better to call them general arrangement drawings. The panel sizes are almost certainly related to the GWR models' dimensions, although the layouts were taken from the original Derby photos and Atthill's Picture History of the S&DJR. That was about the only reference book I had, apart from Casserley's British Joint Lines.

A general arrangement drawing based on an official Derby photograph. The small squares are 1/10th of an inch in 4mm/1ft scale.

These are very basic drawings. The boiler fittings in particular are sketches from the official photos. Although our layout was based on 1930 - 28 or one of its longer-lived colleagues was always at the top of my wants list, but beyond my modelling capabilities.

As with the other drawings the small squares are 1/10 of an inch - for 4mm/1ft. These general arrangement drawings have been made from photographs, sometimes with the aid of an overall length. So do not consider them as scale drawings. The photograph from which this box was drawn is at www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/26350027

I have now spotted a proper scale drawing of this vehicle which was a 5 ton 25 ft Fruit & Milk Van, in Peter Tatlow's Historic Carriage Drawings - Volume Three - Non-passenger Coaching Stock - page 106. It appears that the S&D had 12 - nos. 7 -18.

Given that this was drawn from a photograph without dimensions I am happy to find out that it is only 4mm too long and exactly right from solebar to the bottom of the roof!
The model, that I now find is 4mm too long, is at www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/26452597

The right-hand end compartment has double doors and appears to be a compartment for luggage, possibly with seats for staff - as the doors were fitted with drop-lights. The drawing has overlooked the right-hand drop-light and there are no hinges drawn. The door handle is also of a different type from the single doors. The 'door' to the right of the crest should not be a door - the grab handle and the door edge lines should be ignored. The panelling generally replicates a door at that point but there is no handle, grab or hinges. Please see the photograph for a better guide to the layout.
Perhaps I should go back to the drawing board!

This from a very oblique view. It is at the front of a local train to Highbridge, waiting to depart at Burnham Station some time before 1897. There are two projections in the top centre panel, but it is not clear what they are. I suspect that the lettering was a guess.

27.10.2012 I am amazed that a series of drawings, that I made from photos back in the early 70s, has created the amount of interest that they have. Mind you I am still not sure what made a ready-to-run manufacturer like Bachman produce a 7F 2-8-0 with limited range of operation. They didn't even run over the whole of the S&D - apart from occasional visits to Highbridge works (edit - I am not at all sure that the class did come up the Burnham line at all). S&D magic!

The left end has a guard's ducket or lookout - the shading in the lower panel shows where it curves under. The train was formed of two of these brake thirds, virtually the same, but one had an upholstered compartment for office staff and supervisors. In between was a former composite coach - all of the same design and construction. These, a photograph (plate 62) and many more details can be found in Colin Maggs' excellent 'Highbridge in its Heyday'.

I clearly haven't followed my drawing or the photo on page 34 of Atthill's Picture History of the S&D, as there should be lamp tops as well as ventilators on the roof and I have obviously followed the lower roof profile of the GWR clerestory coaches from which this was concocted, rather than the higher single arc roof seen in the photo. Of course there is also my reluctance to hack off the GWR's 'G' shaped hand grabs, to allow the SDJR's reversed 'S' shaped ones to be fitted. But this was 40 years ago and I had limited resources. The Guard's door and ducket have been switched - maybe to avoid too many segments having to be cut and reassembled. Why the central rib of the ducket's panelling has been missed I don't know.
Anyway I don't remember seeing anyone else modelling 4mm blue S&D in the sixties and early seventies. There was Mac Pyrke's improbable (albeit nicely modelled) Berrow Branch with 2Ps, some BR standard types & an odd Bulleid venturing several miles up the coast beyond Highbridge, but that was in the near contemporary BR steam period. There were a few drawings and photos in the modelling press and I think there were some 7mm finescale models about.
I have recently rediscovered the July 1993 Railway Modeller, which featured Denys Brownlee's 2mm/1ft scale model of Burnham-on-Sea in the 1930 period. He let himself have the slightly doubtful presence of a 7F up the branch. Perhaps it was on a running in turn from Highbridge Works. I can't remember if they did ever go there for maintenance.

This was my attempt at this carriage with the curious half compartment at the end. (Having typed in this note, I came across the explanation in Mitchell & Smith's Bath to Evercreech Junction. It started life as a luggage compartment.)
I didn't put footboards on the bogie carriages as they seemed destined to catch on platforms etc. As usual the Triang GWR clerestory 'G' hand grabs have remained. I see that Roxey do a pack of etched LSWR reversed 'S' shaped ones. So if I ever get back to putting these models on a track, I could upgrade them, I suppose.
I notice that I have missed off the crest. I could have digitally inserted one, but I prefer to show these old models how I had them running in the late 1960s.
I think I can justifiably put the location as Highbridge, as both the prototype and model were built there and indeed the drawing was drawn there - albeit at slightly different map references!
