The flat fish was probably scavenged from one of a couple of boats that were unloading their catches. There have been a mother and a baby seal in the harbour, but they were reported to have died a few weeks ago.So this would appear to be a newcomer. A local man watching this one, said that he hadn't seen it before.
This seal stayed on our beach for a couple of days, long enough for one primary school to organize a group to visit him. Unfortunately he had decided to return to the sea shortly before they arrived.
This has been a regular visitor or maybe resident for several years. There were two one year. They are a non-native invasive species that has reportedly caused major wild-life loss in ponds around the country. They are generally dumped pets, bought when the cartoon Ninja Turtles were all the rage, then they became unwanted, smelly and sometimes aggressive cast-offs.
