Maps
Most of the maps are from a large format gazetteer, which has been dated at 1884, from the stage of development of the railways and some of the census material in the book.
The format is larger than my A4 scanner so I have had to scan in overlapping sections and, just because I like to present things attractively, I have put the sections onto fancy backgrounds which do not appear in the gazetteer.… (read more)

This is part of a page from a gazetteer of Great Britain & Ireland, that my father dated to circa 1884, by looking at the railways. He was a great railway enthusiast and knew which railways were built when. It quotes details from the 1881 census, which confirms the 1880s dating. The gazetteer came from my maternal grandfather, who lived the latter years of his life in Cardiff. This may explain why the maps of Wales are missing. The cover and front pages with the publishing details have also gone. The major cities are shown in this amount of detail, but the county maps are in much smaller scales. The maps are clearly by a number of different map makers.

I thought that this map, with all the different railways shown would be on interest. Most, but not all, were subsequently absorbed into the GWR.

These maps come from a gazetteer which has been dated to c1884. It has seen better days; the covers are missing as are the maps of Wales. The counties of England are in a reasonably large scale, sometimes over several sheets. Scotland and Ireland are in a smaller scale. There are larger scale maps of cities and larger towns. There are often overlaps, especially between the north and south of the pages, as they don't fit the landscape format of computer screens.
To see these maps at higher magnification, please use the 'ACTIONS' button, above on the right of the screen, and choose 'See all sizes'.

As with most of the maps from this old gazetteer, this set of Southampton has been uploaded at maximum resolution. So if you go into the ACTIONS, (top right), you can choose 'see all sizes' and choose the scale at which you want to view the map.
