The Shoal from the hill - Seaford - 7.5.2018
|
|
This portrait format view of the new sculptural community bench seems to have been left out, when uploading the bulk of the views. I am not quite sure why that was, as it is the most popular of my photos of this new addition to Seaford's sea front.

A new installation on the breakwater at Splash Point, Seaford, East Sussex. Initially there were three fishes in the Shoal, but a further two were added at the end of 2017. The creators, Gaby Tofts and Christian Funnel are here putting the finishing touches to the weather proofing.

The work was funded in part by fish-shaped memorial plaques inset into the seats, by which subscribers remember their loved ones.

7.5.2018 - We have now reached the limit - there are seven fishes - with no more room for any more.
There are some photos of the completed set at www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/46660232/in/group/47355/self and neighbouring photos.

This sculptural memorial bench has now been extended, this being funded largely by fish-shaped memorial plaques let into the wooden seating areas.

The plaques set into the seats remember friends or family who have died. The fish hanging from the railings have names of couples - who knows what their relationships are - but they think they are special enough to celebrate in this way. The profits from the sale of the plaques have helped to pay for the sculpture.
Bizarre Birds around Seaford - c 15.9.2016

Maybe from the same source as last year's 'Minions' decorated waste bins, these exotic birds have been appearing in prominent places in and around Seaford over the last couple of weeks.
Summer 2019 - regrettably most of these five birds have now disappeared - The Exceat Bridge got more and more damaged and has now gone, The Buckle by-pass one has been moved the the fence around a sub-station near Seaford railway station. The two pond birds have disappeared. Only the Denton roundabout one is still standing proudly where it first appeared.

Creating a new album to bring together Seaford's recent public artworks, I discovered that I hadn't previously uploaded these two collages.
This is the second batch of exotic birds to decorate our town, produced by an anonymous artist. The one at the top left has now disappeared and one of the railway station birds has had its head knocked off and the hedge has grown up showing less of the remaining birds. The Steyne Road hoarding bird became detached and was propped against a nearby building for a while, but has now disappeared.

These fish appeared last year along seafront railings. As with the colourful birds, no-one seems to know who made them and put them there for all to enjoy.

The fish shaped plaques embedded in the wooden seats mainly commemorate departed loved ones. One can also mark other events or organisations. The fee for these commemorations also contributes to the cost of the whole installation and its ongoing maintenance.

Our family does not have loved ones remembered here, but is touching to see these tokens of love and remembrance on Christmas Day.
The inset fishes bear the names of loved ones departed.
