Most major cities, large towns and even smaller communities have a London Road. It was their connection to their capital city, so it was usually a long road leading towards London. When towns grew big enough to justify having two or more railway stations, whether provided by an existing railway company or by a competitor, it needed to be on or near a major road. Until 1948 the railway companies were privately owned and often in competition with each other for passengers and freight. Since a rationalization programme in the 1960s many smaller stations and less viable routes have been cut out. I assume that some of the London Road stations have disappeared in that process. In some cases town redevelopment has changed street names or cut longer ones short, so some London Roads may themselves no longer connect with stations.
