Brighton is a very busy station with very frequent trains to Gatwick and London and beyond to Peterborough, Bedford and Cambridge, to Portsmouth and Southampton to the west and Eastbourne and Hastings to the east. So its platforms have to be carefully managed. Passenger trains are sometimes double parked.
