St Mary the Virgin - Friston - the Tapsell gate

St Mary the Virgin - Friston - the Tapsell gate
The Tapsell gate is a very local Sussex device, which allows a funeral party's pall-bearers to pass either side of the central pivot while the coffin is carried over it. Otherwise it is is a well balanced gate allowing easy access despite its width.

Thanks, Roger. The pond that was to my back as I took this photo is a scheduled monument, mentioned in the Domesday Book and eligible as a SM as it was man-made.HFF

The gates are a local Sussex design. I think that Mr. Tapsell was an undertaker and designed the gates to be wide enough for a coffin and its bearers to pass through and yet be easy to open and shut by ordinary users. It really is easy to use, pivoting at the centre. HFF Carol.
