The identification is the closest I could find. I think that this might be a female as the male has long branched antennal clubs, according to my reference book.

I think your identification is spot on Phil. We had never seen this creature until moving to East Anglia from industrial Lancashire in April 1979. One sunny warm evening a few weeks later (early June time) we were shocked to see the sky absolutely full of them and wondered whatever they were. In Suffolk they call them ‘June Bugs’ or, but do forgive the guesswork to the spelling, ‘Midgamadaws’.

Many thanks for your confirmation of the ID. This was a solitary one, not a swarm like yours. We have had quite a few Rose Chafers, but not many other beetles out and about.
