I agree. The purple swirling around into orange/gold is, uh, far out, really, and the cross behind the swirl both sets the swirl off and merges with it (the blue section).

The colouring is down to the combinations provided in the Photoshop Elements 'color gradients'. The swirl is created by taking a copy of the underlying cross shape and using an effect called 'polar coordinates', which turns rectangular shapes into circular ones. It can be reversed to turn round shopes into more rectangular forms.
