The castle was built by the lords of Parthenay with finances of the king of England, John Lackland. The submission of Poitou to the king of France, Louis IX (St. Louis) in 1240 put an end to the history of the castle, whose position is no longer stategic. The castle is abandoned in the fifteenth century.
