In the northern part of the city, parts of the Berlin Wall have been transformed into an open-air exhibition which explains the operation of the wall and commemorates those who dies attempting to cross the border
Gartenstrasse Mural
The mural gives an idea of the width of the 'death strip'
In place of the wall
Parts of the wall have been replaced by poles of weathering steel
Bergstrasse
Bergstrasse was severed by the construction of the wall in 1961 and has been left much as it was.
Window of Remembrance
This panel is dedicated to the 138 people who lost their lives at the Wall
Along Bernauer Strasse
A view of the so-called "History Mile" looking east. Information boards tell the stories of some of those who attempted to escape to the west
Wall Bricks
The course of the wall is marked throughout by a double line of bricks set into the road or pavement.
Border fortifications
From the Documentation Centre, there is a view into a barriered-off section which gives an indication of what the wall used to look like on the East side
