I think that a sky like that has always been part of the analogue world. Yes, given time, a discerning light meter, a pad and pencil for notes and calculations and perhaps a few bracketed exposures, it is possible to produce a negative from which a wide range of tones can be extracted - but then you have missed the moment. I would rather have the moment! By the way, I think that the shadow detail and tones in this picture are excellent.

Certainly the shadow details and tones here make up for white sky :)

a beautiful photo - young kid in an old and abondoned building - what a boost for fantasy and adventure - a brave knight - maybe on his way to rescue a maiden ... This comes to my mind

Well - photo technically - it depicts my experience with film and sensor. Digital image - limited "binned" highlight falloff - but many discremination possibilities in the shadows. (->ETR required) With film like i.e. Acros and appropriate development you probably could have differentiated highlights in the sky, but have lost deep shadow details(->ETL).
