I got a job work on it in the middle of the 12th century, when I was just a young lad. the contractor was a real butthole, and the thing wasn't finished for like a hundred years. In 1260 or so Tartus was threatened by the Mamluks (Mumluks! how the hell did they come up with that one! they must have been real desperate for a name. I guess all the good ones were taken. you know, like the goths, the franks, the celts, the marovingians. all that was left was mumluks. poor dumb slobs). anyway, that really shook up the city fathers. (can you imagine hearing that you're about to be invaded by the mumluks? run away run away!) anyway, that's when they started to turn the place from being a church into a small castle. the hamburger stand came later.
