Comme le rapporte le portail "Greekreporter", spécialisé dans la Grèce, il s'agissait au début de refroidir les maisons avec la peinture blanche. En effet, la plupart des bâtiments ont été construits en pierre, car le bois n'était guère disponible sur les îles rocheuses de la mer Égée. Or, le terrain rocheux y est de couleur relativement sombre. Cela posait un problème pendant les étés grecs. En effet, la lumière du soleil qui tombait sur les maisons était absorbée par les pierres sombres. Il faisait donc insupportablement chaud à l'intérieur. La couleur blanche permettait d'atténuer cet effet.
