Mood light coaster - batteries

2x AA cells. Unfortunately they seem to have quite a high internal resistance. Although brand new (and supposedly full), they quickly drop down to 1V and below when the LED board is set to full blast. I had the same problem with old NiMH cells and wanted to toss them, but if alkali cells do the same... Maybe I need high-current rechargeable ones.
