Indeed the sad ending for the automobiles that are no longer usable. Hopefully the 'what's left' of them can be recycled in some way. great find Lutz. :)

I think, they recycle a lot today. I lately read, that 50% of our steel production here in Germany comes from scrap.

... you are right of course, that was due to politics going crazy once more in 2008 or so. It order to get the economy on track again, you got a premium (cash for clunkers, don't remember how much but it was a lot) if you scrapped your car. This was the result.
