“Eros, who is the most beautiful of the deathless gods, loosens the limbs and overpowers reason and good counsel in the hearts of all gods and men.” – Hesiod, Theogony

In this idyllic scene, Eros, the mischievous god of desire, flies toward a woman seated amid plants in a garden. A youth and young woman holding a parasol attend the woman. While the goddess Aphrodite presided over female beauty, Eros, her son according to most sources, was associated with both male and female beauty.
