Relief of a Bishop in the Cloisters, October 2010

Relief of a Bishop
Date: ca. 1400–1440
Culture: South Netherlandish
Medium: Limestone
Dimensions: Overall (w/o mount): 20 7/8 x 9 3/16 x 2 13/16 in. (53 x 23.4 x 7.2 cm)
Classification: Sculpture-Stone
Credit Line: The Cloisters Collection, 2002
Accession Number: 2002.338
Description:
This effigy of a bishop, carved in the dark limestone characteristic of the South Lowlands, is a fragment of a larger funerary relief. Although isolated from its original context, the sculpture still conveys the solemnity of the memorial monument. The image was carved at about the time that the workshop of Robert Campin, which created the triptych in this gallery, was producing seminal works in Tournai where the cathedral preserves an important group of relief sculptures similar to this one.
