The simple objects and lively patterns on the table are arranged to give this still life the weightless appearance of Japanese wood-block prints which Bonnard collected. In 1926 Bonnard bought a house in Le Cannet, a small village near Cannes, in the south of France, which became his primary residence after 1931.
