Marble Statue of Aphrodite Anadyomene in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, May 2011

Marble statuette of Aphrodite Anadyomene (rising)
Period: Hellenistic or Early Imperial
Date: 3rd–2nd century B.C., or 1st century A.D.
Culture: Roman or Greek
Medium: Marble
Dimensions: H. 50.32 cm.
Classification: Stone Sculpture
Credit Line: Fletcher Fund, 1927
Accession Number: 27.122.17
Description:
This Aphrodite’s arms were originally in a pose very similar to that of the statue of the goddess displayed nearby. Here, the stance is reversed; most of the figure’s weight is on the right leg instead of the left. Such statuettes were popular decorations in villa gardens.
