Fragment of a Terracotta Kylix Attributed to Makron in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, April 2011

Terracotta kylix (drinking cup)
Attributed to Makron
Period: Classical
Date: ca. 480 B.C.
Culture: Greek, Attic
Medium: Terracotta
Dimensions: H. 3 1/2 in. (8.9 cm) diameter 4 13/16 in. (12.2 cm)
Classification: Vases
Credit Line: Rogers Fund, 1907
Accession Number: 07.286.49
Description:
Interior, two men reclining and nude youth, labeled Amykos, on the ground
In this representation, Makron seems to adapt a symposium scene (drinking party) to a mythological subject. The ship Argo set out form Greece eastward in search of the Golden Fleece. The participating heroes included Jason, Peleus, Meleager, Herakles, and the Dioskuroi—Castor and Pollux. At one point in the journey, King Amykos challenged the Dioskuroi to a boxing match and was defeated. The scene here may depict the two heroes, reclining with phialai (libation bowls) for offerings, and the vanquished Amykos.
