Roman Marble Funerary Relief in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Sept. 2007

Roman Marble Funerary Relief in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Sept. 2007
Marble funerary relief
Roman, 2nd-3rd century AD

Accession # 49.69.5

Funerary reliefs in the shape of a circular tondo, depicting a man and a woman or, as in this case, the whole family, are principally known from Thrace, northern Greece, and the Danube provinces. Some are inscribed, but this example leaves the man, his wife, and two sons unnamed.

Text from the Metropolitan Museum of Art label.
