Terracotta Kantharos with Head of a Satyr in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Sept. 2007

Terracotta Kantharos with Head of a Satyr in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Sept. 2007
Terracotta kantharos (drinking cup with two vertical handles): heads of a satyr and a woman
Greek, Attic, red-figure, ca. 420 BC
Attributed to Aison and the Spetia Class of head vases
Obverse and reverse: libation scenes

Accession # 27.122.9

The canonical kantharos was a drinking cup. This example is special because of the spout introduced in the woman's neck, a feature suggesting that the vase may have been used for offerings. The rendering of the satyr's head is impressively plastic, indeed sculptural.
