Etruscan Terracotta 4-Handled Amphora in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, February 2008

Etruscan Terracotta 4-Handled Amphora in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, February 2008
Terracotta Four-Handled Amphora (jar)
Etruscan, Italo-Corinthian, ca. 675-650 BC
Three felines and a winged bird

Accession # 2001.761.8

This type of vase represents a local response to the animals painted on ProtoCorinthian pottery imported from Greece. Although the felines are standard types, the odd griffin-like hybrid is a unique invention.
