Harpokrates with Double Crown, Cornucopia, and Pot in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, March 2010

Harpokrates with Double Crown, Cornucopia, and Pot in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, March 2010
Harpocrates with Double Crown, Cornucopia, and Pot
2nd-3rd century AD
Terracotta with traces of white slip

Accession # 1994.298

By the Roman Period, Harpokrates had become a fertility god. His round pot probably comes from fertilizing Nile water or perhaps food.

Images created in the traditionally Greek medium of terracotta were popular in domestic and funerary contexts.

Text from the Metropolitan Museum of Art label.
