Krater with a Comic Figure of Prometheus in the Getty Villa, July 2008

Krater with a Comic Figure of Prometheus in the Getty Villa, July 2008
Mixing Vessel with a Comic Figure of Prometheus
Greek, made in Apulia, South Italy, 330-320 BC
Terracotta
Gnathian bell krater attributed to the Konnakis Painter

Inventory # 82.AE.15

The old man with a swollen belly and an oversize phallus parodies the tragic figure of Prometheus. Punished by the gods for revealing the secret of fire to mankind, Prometheus was condemned to have an eagle peck continuously at his liver. Here the eagle is farcically replaced by a curious crow.
