The sisters of Merc-y

Scumrun 2010

From Fontwell Park in Sussex, via Portsmouth and Le Harve, to Amsterdam, Maastricht, Nürburgring, Paris, and back over a long weekend — all in cars costing less than £500. We did it in a 30-year-old Mercedes 230E. She's an incredible old trooper, hugely smooth, fast, and reliable. There're a fair few nutters along the way, and some really incredible people too. AND all together we raised over £…  (read more)

The sisters of Merc-y

Ben (230E, later series), "Rest in pièce de résistance" (240TD), and Molly (230E, early series), all of whom managed the entire Scumrun without problems. Not bad for 30-year-old cars, especially considering Molly (the eldest) hadn't moved since the previous year's Scumrun, and ran the Nürburgring along the way! (Laptime, after the brakes faded away, was 15 minutes. None too shabby!) The 30-somethings on the human side of the team don't scrub up too badly either ;)

Ragging the 'ring!

Fairly self-evidently, if you spot that it's me driving, this wasn't taken by me! Molly's particularly thin (175) tyres squealed like you wouldn't believe, and the auto 'box was occasionally a pain, but it was the rapidly cooking brakes that meant I had to back right off after about 5km. But considering that, a laptime of 15 minutes for a 30-year-old car is actually not too shabby! (New Ferrari lap record is just under 7 (which astonished everyone), and a good, sorted hot hatch can do it in 10 or so.)
