I might have said this before (sorry, if so!) but this is where King Canute is supposed to failed in his attempt to order the tide back, in order to prove to his flattering courtiers that he wasn't as great as they said he was! I never liked this story; it just doesn't ring true. It sounds like a bit of hagiography invented after his death.

You're quite correct of course Andy. It's probably one of the reasons why there is such a high tourist footfall here.

As to the truth of it, I suspect we'll never know for sure but, as the saying goes, "never let the truth get in the way of a good story."
