what's the use of the rope ?

I am not sure, though I expect it does belt the sticks together, allowing the wood to dry a little quicker.

In France, a "corde" was an unit of measure for firewood (but there is a long time ago)

That term is still used here, in English, Sylvain -- a cord of wood is the volume of wood eight feet by four feet by four feet (128 cubic feet, or something less than four cubic metres). English dictionaries relate it back to the French word, and ultimately to Greek for rope, and suggest that one measured the amount of wood by measuring the circumference with a rope, thus a standard cord, measuring wood of a known length, made for a standard volume.
I suppose if you had a sixteen-foot piece of rope, it would easily do both measurements.
