C'est Jean-Baptiste Saint, patron de l'industrie du tissage de jute dans la vallée de la Nièvre qui décida de la construction du château en 1880, preuve de sa réussite sociale. Il confia sa réalisation à l'architecte amiénois Paul Delefortrie. Les travaux furent achevés en 1886.
