Forty Mile Point
The lighthouse and grounds at Forty Mile Point--40 miles from Mackinac; 40 miles from Alpena--near Rogers City, Michigan. Now a county park with a pretty good museum.

Forty Mile Steps
This stair's inside the house; I showed you the tower staircase a few weeks back. When it was in use, this was a fine middle-class home.

Forty Mile Point Lighthouse
From the beach, in front of the light. They tell me there's a shipwreck down the beach a bit, but we didn't go looking for it, largely because the flies were pretty aggressive.
This lighthouse looks more like a schoolhouse than most. That house is a duplex; half is in use, I gather, while the other half is the main part of the museum.

Forty Mile Station
The station at Lake Huron's Forty Mile Point included several buildings--the light tower, a duplex keepers' dwelling (attached to the tower), a barn (originally a bunk house for the construction crew; now in use as a gift shop), a privy (yup: brick), and an oil storage shed. There's also a fog horn building on the property, though it does not show in this photo.
The park at the site also has the pilot house from the steamer Calcite, in honor of the local mariners, and of the large calcite quarry which alongside Rogers City.

Forty Mile Window

For now, at least, the last picture in this set.
40 Mile Point Lighthouse
Near Rogers City on Lake Huron. Not the prettiest lighthouse on the Great Lakes, and surprisingly difficult to photograph well.
On the other hand, it's an excellent museum complex , and an absolutely delightful park. And there's a shipwreck just a few yards down the beach. Well worth a visit.
