Door County
Photos from our visit to Door County, Wisconsin, in August of 2005.
Ryerson
Perhaps the prettiest Laker ever, Edward Ryerson is parked at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. Permanently, near as anyone can tell.
Since the owners are unwilling to sully her fine lines with a self-unloader she's a wasted ship, never stirring out from this mooring. Might as well send her to the breakers....
Sorry 'bout the slight incline. Shooting conditions were not ideal.
Lifesaving Station
The Sturgeon Bay Canal Station continues to function as a lifesaving station, which was its function even before the lights were built. Here's the little rescue boat, by its pier.
Cana Island Lighthouse
This lighthouse is on a pretty little island near Bailey's Harbor in Wisconsin's Door County. Signs along the road to the place warn that there is no parking and that there are no facilities; nonetheless, there's a $4.00 charge. Turns out that there is parking (after a fashion), and that there are porta-potties--and that the island is connected to the mainland by a causeway. At least most of the time.
Sherwood Point Light
This light is at the Green Bay end of the Sturgeon Bay channel which divides Wisconsin's Door County. This was the last manned lighthouse on the Great Lakes.
The location is not particularly well-marked, probably because its grounds are not open to the public.
Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Light
The best of several unsatisfactory photographs I took of this light. The surrounding buildings are interesting, but I didn't capture them well.
The structure did not originally have this elaborate bracing, but it quickly became evident that the tower would not stand without bracing. All in all, it turned out to be quite attractive.

Light at Kewaunee
This was once a really pretty building, but much of the detail seems to have been sacrificed to simplify maintenance. Still attractive from the side , but you really can't capture that from the pier.
Joan @ Cave Point
This came out nicely, I think. Taken during last weekend's Door County trip.
