The Main Gate – Japanese Tea Garden, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California

The most popular concession at the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition, the Japanese Village (later the Japanese Tea Garden) was operated by Australian born George Turner Marsh. Marsh shipped a large Oriental gate that had been constructed for his own garden in Mill Valley to the park site and installed it as the main entrance. The Tea House and other buildings within the garden were all built in the Japanese fashion of post and beam construction. 90 years later after suffering the wages of time, the main gate was replicated in Japan and replaced. The Tea House is also a reconstruction of the original.
