This milestone on the towpath of the Macclesfield Canal has been defaced to obliterate the place name Marple. This was done in the dark days of World War 2 to confuse any invaders or spies.

Yes - the greens and yellows brightened as they were by the brief spell of sunshine looked too cheerful for a colour version - but the directional light did bring out the lettering on the stone which only required a little 'pushing' to produce the effect above.
