Recently, I made a day trip down to the Francis Marion National Forest which is located in Berkeley and Charleston Counties of South Carolina. It covers about 250,000 acres and contains some of the best longleaf pine forests in the southeast.
It is a prime location for native orchids, both terrestrial and epiphytic. My hope was to locate and photograph both Platanthera cristata and Epidendrum magnoliae -- two orchid species found along the Atlantic Coastal Plain.

On a recent trip to southeastern North Carolina, we saw many orchids and other wildflowers. A group of us met in the Green Swamp Preserve -- a rich, diverse, wild area managed by The Nature Conservancy.
OK... None of us were sure just what species of orchid this is. At first glance, it appears to be Platanthera cristata , but its size and other features lead us to believe otherwise. Is it a hybrid or another species??? This particular plant was 30 inches tall!

I spent the weekend with my photography friends in the Green Swamp Preserve and the Francis Marion National Forest. This image was taken in the Francis Marion. What a wonderful day we had.
