I always thought it was Alexander Graham Bell until I spotted this plaque on Via dei Serragli, the street we where we stayed in Florence. Bell nicked his patent. See this article in The Guardian for more details.

Prices match its sumptuous interior. The only veggie option was tomatoes tartar with onions and olives, buratta and basil jelly at a mere €22. Hamburger, home-made french fries, salad and dried tomatoes would set you back €26. Even a coffee would have cost €5.70!
We headed for a bar across the road and had a beer instead.
