Le bâtiment date de 1794.
Quand la famille de Chateauvieux s’installa dans la maison, en 1855, elle fut agrandie pour abriter vingt et une personnes en permanence. On y cultivait à l'époque le café.
Sur un site accueillant et propice à la ballade et au bien-être, le Jardin Botanique de La Réunion est aujourd’hui une vitrine incontournable pour appréhender le patrimoine végétal endémique de l'île.
