Bischoff Valentin von Terni traute heimlich verliebte Paare, die wegen ihres unterschiedlichen Standes oder weil sie aus verfehdeten Familien stammten, eigentlich nicht heiraten durften. Der Überlieferung nach schenkte er ihnen zur Trauung einen Blumenstrauss aus seinem eigenen Garten. Als seine heimlichen Trauungen aufflogen, kannte der Kaiser kein Pardon und liess den Bischof am 14. Februar 269 enthaupten. Sein Kampf für die Liebe und der Märtyrer-Tod gelten bis heute als wahrscheinlichster Ursprung des Valentinstags.
