I once received a police caution for SCOOTING my bike along fifty yards of deserted pavement to avoid cycling round a one-way street,. And now I'll likely get nicked for photographing a police officer!

Is cycling on the pavement against the law?

Yes. Cycling on the footway (pavement) is an offence under Section 72 of the Highways Act 1835 as amended by Section 85 (1) of the Local Government Act 1888.
