But it's one of those compositions where the eye is drawn simultaneously in two directions. If the whole picture were darkened slightly the foreground would compete less with the tower and sky, and also render the stonework better.

Leave it be. This is one of my old 4mp pics from long ago and has special associations.
The only slight drawing of the eye is with those white roses in the corner.

To the bold pattern and straight lines of the topiary in the foreground as well. On where the eye will be drawn, you can hedge your bets.
